MayaMam Weavers is a cooperative that was started by women in Cajolá in 2008. Cajolá is a Mayan town in the western highlands of Guatemala, and in an attempt to overcome poverty, these women came together to explore new ways to provide jobs within their community. Rather than migrating to the U.S. and separating their families, these women chose to create handwoven home goods and accessories inspired by the rich colors, patterns, and traditional weaving techniques of Mayan culture. Since its beginning, the cooperative has grown to 20 weavers and seamstresses who all earn fair trade wages, while learning the skills required to run a successful business. MayaMam Weavers also provides on-site childcare and adult literacy classes. Four women teach at the children’s school, and classes are taught in both Spanish and their native Mam language in order to foster the children’s educations while valuing their Mayan culture. MayaMam Weavers is also based in Morristown, NJ, and the cooperative is a proud member of the Fair Trade Federation. The mission of MayaMam Weavers is to make a difference in the lives of women and provide a better future for their children through the business of creating and selling handcrafted home goods.
